LIFE AT 1847

OUR PURPOSE & OUR VALUES…

Our Purpose:

1847 is all about modern innovative food & drinks served in a professional but relaxed environment.

We strive on serving nothing but fresh food, prepped and cooked in our kitchens. Our wine list, cocktails and soft drinks are bespoke to match the menu, offering something a little different. We also like to be a bit different when it comes to our team. Not only do we want to attract the best in the industry, we also look to take people on from grass roots level that we can develop, mentor & train in offering the best hospitality experience.

Our Values:

IDENTITY:

Scandi, modern, innovative, simple. Food led, great drinks, exceptional service. Funky music, modern classics. Professional but down to earth.

BEHAVE:

One step ahead, positive, enthusiastic and prepared. Communicate, take responsibility and action. Enjoy yourself, be yourself, look the part, be the best.

BELIEVE:

To wow every customer every time. Individual tailored experience. Every customer should leave happy. No is not the answer, now, what’s the question?

INSPIRATIONS:

Led the way in meat free dining. Quality through each 1847 experience. Reputation for great food not just veggie food. Commercial however championing local producers.

WHAT’S LIFE LIKE AT 1847?

Fast paced, unique and rewarding.

We are always on the look-out for people ready to rise to the challenge. Yes, it’s hard work, but let’s be honest, knowing that you’ve been able to do your best and that our customers have left having the best experience is rewarding. But that’s not all, we also look to develop massively from within. We mentor all movers and shakers in the business in order to support them in their next step up.

Don’t just take it from me, here’s a few of our team to say more:

1847 vegetarian restaurants

“I originally joined 1847 Manchester as Sous chef in the Spring 2014. After ten months of learning this role I was offered the opportunity to move to Birmingham to take my first Head Chef role. I’ve since had the opportunity to learn the skills of a General Manager which include Finance, HR & Marketing. I plan to set up my own Restaurant in the next 5 years so the experience I’ve gained at 1847 has been priceless!”

Tony Cridland, Head Chef 1847 Birmingham

1847 vegetarian restaurants

“I joined 1847 Manchester as their Apprentice Chef. This was my first full time chef position and I was able to learn the skills of a kitchen whilst being trained and supported by my college. I left 1847 for a short period but then decided to come back as I felt they really gave me the opportunity to develop. I restarted as Chef de Partie and was promoted to Sous Chef within six months.

THE SERIOUS STUFF

The everyday stuff:

We know the reason you’ve decided to work in hospitality is because you’re a doer. Someone who likes to roll their sleeves up and get on with it. Therefore our training matches this. Most of our training is delivered on the restaurant floor, not some stuffy boardroom. You’ll be mentored by your line manager and will have a number of what we like to call “coffee chats”. These are regular one to ones with your Line Manager to see how things are going with you and what you may need some extra support with. Nothing too formal, just a chat over a coffee!

Being new:

First days are always full of excitement and nerves and we try to make it more of the first. You’ll meet your Line Manager and also most importantly the people you’ll be working alongside closely. These will be the people you ask all your questions to like “where’s this, whose that etc etc. Hopefully we can head off most of those questions through your induction but they’ll always be a few that sneak through!

Learning & Development:

This is what we are all about. We can cook with the best ingredients, have the best artwork on our walls but if the team aren’t happy, there’s no point wasting the money. We invest heavily, not only in financial terms but also time and effort into developing our teams to make them the best at what they do.

This starts with growing from within. We offer 2 apprenticeship roles in all of our restaurants – one front of house and the other in the kitchen. These are people who just need a break within hospitality. They are keen and ambitious but just need that one break to actually be shown the path from the very beginning. We have an intake once a year and they complete a detailed training programme lasting between 9-12 months. At the end they come out with a nationally recognised qualification aswell as the crucial industry experience. We strive to offer all Apprentices permanent roles with us when they finish and plan to watch them develop into budding Head Chefs and Restaurant Managers.

We also offer our Manager’s and number two’s the opportunity to learn key Management skills, ranging from Recruitment your own team through to Budget Planning. These equip our teams with the knowledge and power to be able to run their own sites, as nobody is better placed to know the business other than the people working in it.

And there’s also the day to day individual mentoring that the senior people offer all the team. So whether this is due to a specific need in the business or an area they have an interest in, we are happy to support.

THE NICE STUFF

Twice a year we like to say thank you to our teams by rewarding them with a party of their choice. So whether that’s go karting, bowling or beers, that’s up to each team to decide, but again, it’s on us.

We offer a Front of House and also a Kitchen Apprentice scheme in each of our restaurants, with the focus over the 9-12 month programme of gaining keys skills in all the roles in that department.

At the end of the scheme, we intend to offer all apprentices a permanent role with us at a supervisor level. So if you’re a budding Head Chef or Restaurant Manager, this is exactly what you are looking for.
